How to grow local in video production.
Expanding Your Network of Neighborhood Production Partners.
Today I received an email from a local aspiring filmmaker that read- "I wanted to ask you if you knew of any job openings in your network related to video production around DC?" This is not the first time I've received this ask, and it certainly won't be the last. That said, here are a few directions I'd point you in regarding your neighborhood network-
Connect With...
Local Production Companies, Agencies & Studios. Whether through LinkedIn messages, phone call or email, I'd highly recommend personally reaching out to these local contacts. You can offer some coffee or tea and a chat to get to know one another and discuss collaboration. This is also a great way to build up references and production partners in the case clients contact you directly.
Film Offices. I scored my first ever on set gig through Film.org- the Philadelphia Film Office website. Local film office websites often share local crew contact info and job opportunities pertaining to film. Once you check legitimacy, these job posts can be a lovely way to get on set and interact with local crews in person. You may even build some sustainable relationships from the experience and continue your partnership through future productions.
Social Groups & Local Creative Meets. Facebook groups, Instagram pages and other virtual creative spaces often lead to productive creative production conversation. These groups (like Women Working in Reality TV and Baltimore Freelancers Collective on Facebook) also post local events and meet-ups where you can grab food and start conversing with local filmmakers you may have never known were your neighbors.
Other Freelancers. I use social media to connect with likeminded freelancers with intriguing aesthetic in their visual portfolio. Often, filmmakers post stills or BTS from shoots, and DMs relating to this content is a great way to spark conversation and connect.
The most important takeaway from all of this is to be yourself. Just focus on being you and finding production partners that appreciate you for who you are. If you'd like to connect with me- just shoot me a message! I love meeting new collaborators.
Until next time,
Delaney
